Just because your Chi has puppies
doesn't put you among that select group
of Chihuahua breeders. In fact, if you get your Chi from reputable Chihuahua breeders, they'll ask if you intend to "show" your Chihuahua or not. If not, chances are you want a pet and they'll ask you to have your pet spayed or neutered.
Good Chihuahua breeders are devoted to their breed. When breeding is considered, there is a target reason for the match--some particular trait to be accentuated. They never breed Chis just to have some to sell. They'll mate their animals for a reason, keep the best for themselves, and sell the rest.
But don't think you'll just walk in, plunk down some cash, and walk out with a dog! Good Chihuahua breeders will interview you to the point of interrogation! They want good and appropriate homes for their dogs. Chihuahuas are very protective and selective animals. They may choose to protect one family member and snap at the rest unless they have been well socialized. Matching Chis to prospective families is critical.
Good chihuahua breeders will ask you where you live, how many people are in your home, what kind of home you have and how active you are. They will also ask if you can afford the kind of veterinarian care that Chihuahuas need, not to be nosey, but to be sure "their" dogs will be well taken care of over time. You should be prepared to be asked how many children live in your home and their ages. These are not idle questions. Chihuahuas are not the appropriate breed for everyone.
Knowing good Chihuahua breeders from poor ones can be difficult if you are a first-time Chihuahua owner. Contacts for information about ethical breeders are as close as your vet. There are also Chihuahua websites and clubs that will be happy to provide the names of good breeders. And it's well worth having a Chihuahua breeder you can trust, because they will want to know how "their" dog is doing during its lifetime. And you will be able to tap into their knowledge of Chi's if you have questions!
It's like a marriage: choose your Chihuahua breeders wisely. The average Chihuahua might live 15 years, so you and your breeder might have a very long relationsip!
