All you have to do is type in the words "Chihuahua for sale" in your favorite internet browser to see thousands of websites pop into view. That is a horrible sight for THIS Chihuahua lover! It is almost as bad as looking in the want ads!
Why? Think about all the puppy mills that have blossomed since the advent of the internet! It is so very easy to get nationwide exposure and have little to fear from competitors demanding that puppy breeders prove their trustworthiness. Just because a Chihuahua owner has not spayed their female dog and now has a Chihuahua for sale does not mean that the resulting litter has been checked by a vet, had their shots, or are even anything but mixed breed mutts. Yes, mutts can be delightful critters, but they should not be called "Chihuahuas." And they should not cost an arm and a leg, either!
Additionally, pet stores that have a Chihuahua for sale should not be considered when you are looking for a pet. No respectable breeder would ever let a pet store sell a purebred Chihuahua. Breeders will insist on having an interview with you and your family to make sure that the home environment is a match for their animal. There is no control over who buys a dog at a pet store, so the likelihood that those dogs are not purebred Chihuahuas is high.
In order to be sure that the animal you are buying is coming from a reputable dealer, visit a breeder at their place of business. Breeders of purebred animals will have all kinds of awards on their walls, because a breeder wants to show his animals in order to gain a positive reputation as furthering the breed. Breeders that have a Chihuahua for sale as a pet will have spayed or neutered their animals before allowing you to take them home. In some situations, they will require that you sign a promise to have their Chi spayed or neutered if that has not yet been done.
So where should you go to find a Chihuahua for sale? If you are new prospective dog owner, you might wish to contact your local veterinarian and the nearest American Kennel Club branch. Both of those sources will likely be very helpful in steering you to a reputable breeder that has a Chihuahua for sale.
Above all, be patient while trying to find a Chihuahua for sale. You are not just looking for a dog, you are looking for a companion in a long-term relationship!
